Underpinning the axiomatic formulation of quantum theory presented in this undergraduate text is a review of early experiments, a comparison of classical and quantum terminology, a Schroding - equation treatment of the one - dimensional quantum box, and a survey of relevant mathematics. The axiomatic formulation, analogous to the laws of classical physics, consists of six postulates and their elucidation. Included among the many concepts comprehensively discussed and illustrated are: operators; state vectors, wave functions and their interrelation; the physical interpretation of these quantities; experimental observables and their quantal counterparts; classical / quantum connection; and symmetry properties. The theory is applied to a wide variety of soluble one -, two-,and threedimensional systems including the non - relativistic H - atom, charged particles in external eletromagnetic fields, and spin 1/2 and its generalizations. Collisions in both one three dimensions are described using wave packets. Various time - dependent and time - independent approximation method are discussed; among the applications are electromagnetic transition rates and corrections to the non - relativistic H - atom energies. The final chapter of the text deals with multiparticle systems and identical - particle symmetries, with application to the He atom, the Periodic Table, and diatomic molecules. This primary material is augmented by the inclusion of more advanced topics such as gauge invariance, observable phase effects and hidden variables, some of which help to convey the still evolving nature of the subject. Over 150 figures and 450 end - of - chapter exercises are included in the text, which can also be used for self - study or as a supplement in graduate courses.
