This is a paperbound reprint of the second edition (2001) of a 1980 book on the norms of thinking and social action in 50 countries. The study uses the IBM Attitude Survey Questionnaire to provide cross-disciplinary analyses of the factors of power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism and collectivism, sex/gender, long- vs. short-term orientation, cultures in organizations, and intercultural encounters. Appendices include the questionnaire; countries' scores; correlation of those scores to data from other sources; case studies from an organizational cultures research project; and a brief essay on the author's values. Hofstede (emeritus, organizational anthropology and international management, Maastricht U.) has served as a consultant to such international organizations as the World Bank and the Commission of the European Union.
