Hydroelectric plants, such as Hoover Dam shown on the cover,are clean,reliable generators of electricity but are expensive, site limited, and weather dependent. These plants produce ten percent of the United States' electricity and one-fifth of the world's. Hydro was one of the earliest sources of renewable energy, providing electricity for westward expansion in the united States during the early 20th century. Large new facilities are under development in China and South America to meet the electricity demands of their rapid economic growth. Hoover Dam is one of the largest dams tn the United States, yet produces only 10% of the projected output of the Three Gorges Dam under construction in China
