Forest and People in Thailand is a joint research programme between research institutions in Denmark and Thailand. The objective of the programme is to provide a knowledge base that may serve to improve forest management in northern Thailand. The research programme is holistic in the sense that it encompasses all major topics related to the interaction between man, society and the forest.

"Forest in Culture - Culture in Forest" presents background information about a number of topics related to the exploitation and use of the forest:

- Part One of the book gives a short introduction to the vegetation and the people of northern Thailand . Examples of how perceptions of forest and nature are influencing and at the same time influenced by the use of forest are also given in this section.
- Part Two of the book gives a brief history of the main study area with emphasis on the rapidly changing land-use. The changing geopolitical role of the forest areas is introduced in order to explain vital aspects of the present national and regional debate.
- Part Three analyses the forest as a material resource for various forms of exploitation. This section includes descriptions of how forest areas are used for agriculture, extraction of non-timber products, tourism and as a resource for local and international development organisations and for science.
- Part Four introduces the main elements of the main elements of the interactive decision support system that will be a main output from the programme.
