This book reflects this differentiation between essential and non-essential material. Traditional survey books today tend to have twenty or more chapters; we have been able to cover the fundamental material from the field, though, in only fifteen chapters and far fewer pages than you might see in a comprehensive book. But that does not mean that the book is a superficial or "discount" treatment of the field.

As you will see, our text covers the fundamentals in detail and is presented in a dynamic and contemporary fashion; it also makes full use of bold   visual features such as color and photographs that are generally perferred by today's readers.
