The past several decades have witnessed the birth of some entirely new branches of applied mathematics, as well as equally dramatic advances in computer technology that have revolutionized the manner in which everyday work is conducted in the mathematical sciences and engineering. However, these recent developments appear to have made little impact on many undergraduate mathmatics curricula. To some extent this is due to a general and quite reasonable reluctance to part with traditional mathematical methods that have proven so effective over the past few centuries, in favor of relatively new and untested ones. There is also the issue of a proper context in which to introduce these new and untested ones. There is also the issue of a proper context in which to introduce these new mathematical ideas or take advantage of the computer technology that is currently available.
It is believed that an elementary mathematical modeling course giving equal emphasis to both traditional and contemporary topics, as well as to both analytical and computational tools of investigation, would be an excellent way of addressing these and other issues presently of interest to a number of mathematics departments across the country, especially those affiliated with smaller liberal arts colelges. Although many such departments have already come to this conclusion, it appears that few mathematical modeling textbooks presently available take this appoach.
