Among the most intriguing discoveries in reent decades are the high-temperature superconductors. Certain ceramics, such as this yttrium-barium-copper oxide lose all resistance to electrical conduction at relatively "temperatures. In this image,a small cylindrical sample of the superconducting ceramic floats freely above a liquid-nitrogen-cooled permanent magnet. This magnetic effect is one of many useful properties exhibited by these novel materials.
